Ballasts should cost around $150 from ebay. Remember to purchase ballasts made by OEM manufacturers like Hella or Matsushita, not some Korean or Taiwanese knockoff. Rebased D2S bulbs are available but still not ideal and probably illegal per the NHSTA. The only real way to achieve HID light output as designed by OEM lighting is to use the complete set of optics. In addition to the correct ballast and bulb, the projector is a critical link. The Kioto projector in the OEM 300zx headlamp was not designed for HID so the output may have unwanted glare and may not put out the intended amount of light. Ask Olyar15 about the Bosch projector retrofit off the BMW 3-series.
